Stories of the Earth: 8 Seasonal Fairy Tales for the Wheel of the Year
Stories of the Earth is a book of short fairy tales depicting the essence of the Wheel of the Year, the annual
cycle of the Earth's seasons. It consists of eight festivals, spaced at
approximately even intervals throughout the year. These festivals are Winter Solstice, Imbolc or Candlemas, Spring Equinox, Beltane, Summer Solstice, Lammas, Autumn Equinox and Samhain or All Hallows Eve. They are markers of seasonal change as well as psychological growth.
When I first started celebrating the Wheel of the Year, I enjoyed the ritual and the new old/ideas but I longed for the part of my Catholic upbringing that I loved the best. I wanted a STORY to touch my heart and imagination, so that I knew what it was I was celebrating. There were plenty of explanations of what each season symbolized but very few stories. And so, meditating on my experiences of each season, stories flowed through me until I had one for each turn of the Wheel. It was the Winter Solstice story about the return of the Light out of the Darkness that inspired me to write the other seven.
I hope you can use these stories as part of your rituals, as well as just enjoying them for the ideas about the season that they bring up.
